Causes and Treatment of Cystic Acne

This article explains the causes and the treatment of a common disease found in teenagers and children undergoing puberty. The disease can be harmful with inappropriate medication.
Acne is a common human disease that mostly affects children during their adolescence. The disease is characterized by the development of various nodules on skins, especially seborrhea, comedones, papules and pustules. In some cases, it may even lead to scarring. These nodules can develop on several parts of the body, including the chest, the back, but mainly in the face, both inflammatory and non-inflammatory forms. Untreated disease often continues during adulthood, but it can also diminish over time. Therefore, it is not possible to predict how long one's acne will last, even with an appropriate treatment.
Acne is caused by an increase of testosterone. It is the result of a blockage in body follicles. But may other factors are usually involved. It can also be the result of menstrual cycles. You can also develop cystic acne by using too many steroids, especially anabolic ones. Gene is also involved in the growing up of some acne symptoms. It has been proved that the tendency to develop this disease can run in families for generations. The disease may also occur due to increased stress levels. Correlations between acne and stress have been debated, but a recent research indicates that you are more likely to develop acne nodules when you are over stressed. Diet is also involved in acne development, including a glycemic load diet; or over-consumption of milk. Some food associations are likely to increase the sebum and leads to other acne nodules: chocolate and salt associations for example. Acne can have several consequences, both physical and psychological. Many teenagers lose their self-esteem and become depressed. Acne has been involved in many suicide cases in the US and France.
Different treatments can be used to treat the cystic disease. Some of the most common are antibiotics, retinoids, benozyl peroxide and hormonal treatments. Bennozl peroxide is the first kind of treatment involved, especially for moderate acne. It works to eliminate the "P acnes" bacterium and causes dryness of skin so as to eliminate the increase of the sebum. Benozyl peroxide has a severe side effect: it can lead to sun sensitivity and cause sunburn. Therefore, one should associate this medication with a sunscreen when he is likely to have a sun exposition during the day. Antibiotics are used for severe acne cases. They can be applied locally or taken orally. Hormonal treatment works best on young and adult women.
